To Use or Not To Use Text in Reels or TikToks, That Is the Question

After spending a few minutes scrolling on Instagram or TikTok, you may notice that many posts have text in them. Often times they are bold big words in the upper or lower half of the video that is some sort of CTA (call to action). These captions incorporated into videos seem to be in more than 50% of videos seen on IG or TikTok.

These captions serve as a way to captivate the viewers attention straight away by showing what the video will be about. This text is nowadays can be a make or break it for retaining the viewers attention. Attention spans are shorter than ever, and by having a caption that will right away tell you what the video is about is almost necessary nowadays.

Should I Add Text Titles to My Reels or TikToks?

Depending on what the video may be, it may be a good idea to add some sort of text to it to help guide the viewer and allow them to straight away be intrigued. Watching a reel can be like finding new music, you know within the first second or two whether you like a song or not. A caption in the form of text can help guide the viewer and have them make that decision quickly.

Does Instagram Or TikTok Push Videos With Text Titles?

The algorithms in both Instagram and TikTok push videos with text titles or captions within their videos. It favors those with text as it makes videos easier to watch and engages the viewer more. It seems to also push videos with captions applied to them, again seemingly making it easier to someone to digest a video. Many times you may watch a video without sound on, and having captions lets you watch the video without even needing to hear anything.

When Should I Not Add A Text Title Or Caption To My Reels?

It all depends on what video you may be posting. If it’s something that the video itself should explain in it’s visuals, it may be worth leaving it clean and text less. A good test is to watch it without sound on, and see if the video still conveys the same message with just visuals alone. If it does, then you should be fine without adding any text to it. If it leaves you stumped and wondering what the video was, then it’s probably safer to add some text to it.
